Colorful Canvas began with a simple mission: to provide artists in Frederick, MD with a reliable, personal, and inspiring source for high-quality art supplies. Founded in 2014 by Kandy Finneyfrock, a lifelong creative and community advocate, the store quickly grew into more than just a retail space — it became a creative home for the local art scene.
After years of seeing large chains prioritize volume over service, Kandy envisioned something better: a store where artists of all backgrounds could walk in, ask questions, get honest advice, and leave feeling supported in their creative goals. That vision lives on every day inside Colorful Canvas.

We proudly carry brands and materials that many larger retailers overlook, including professional-grade paper, specialty markers, and drafting tools. As one reviewer shared:

We’re open Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm — and on the first Saturday of each month. Whether you need a quick restock or a long chat about techniques, our door is open.

At the heart of Colorful Canvas is Kandy herself — a hands-on owner who greets nearly every customer, answers product questions, and goes the extra mile to track down hard-to-find supplies. As Lora Downs, a long-time art teacher in Frederick, puts it:
